The Patriots had a difficult season last year with a record of 8 wins and 9 losses. This was largely due to many disappointing performances on offense. If we look at the passing game, they finished the season 20th in the league for passing yards with a total of 3,536. This was due to an underwhelming season from Mac Jones, a poorly structured game plan, but also because the Patriots’ receivers were simply not good enough compared to those of the most powerful teams in the league. Jacobi Meyers, who will play for the Las Vegas Raiders this year, was easily the best receiver on the team with a total of 804 yards. The stats of the other receivers, tight ends, and running backs who came closest to him were around 400 and 500 yards. Still focusing on the passing game, the question we all ask ourselves for this year is whether the situation will be better for the team in 2023. Personally, although we believe the situation could improve slightly, we do not believe that the changes made this year are sufficient to make a difference.

First , the good news is that the departure of Meyers for Las Vegas should be compensated by the arrival of Juju Smith Schuster, who won the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in February last year. In 16 games, he collected 933 yards in 2022. The arrival of tight end Mike Gesicki could be a good thing. However, he only collected 322 yards last year, which was well below his total in 2020 and 2021. This is partially due to Tyrek Hill’s arrival in Miami and his explosive duo with Jaylen Waddle as Miami prioritized a more aggressive passing attack style. With the Patriots, Gesicki could be used more often and we hope that he and Hunter Henry will have a better season this year. When we look at the team’s other receivers, we are not convinced that DeVante Parker and Kendrick Bourne will do much better. The young receiver who could be a wildcard for the Patriots is Tyquan Thornton. Although he only collected 247 yards in 13 games last year, it is possible that he will improve for his second season in the NFL. He is a very fast player who could surprise us.

As for the quarterback situation, Mac Jones will start his third season. It’s a make-or-break year for him. If he doesn’t step up his game from the last two years, the Patriots may not be very patient and Bailey Zappe could take his place. The young quarterback will start his second season. He showed some promise in the few games he played last year. However, we haven’t seen enough of him to make predictions about the rest of his career. The fact that the Patriots have signed Bill O’Brien as an offensive coordinator could be a good thing for these two young quarterbacks in development and could help with the structure of the offense.

The biggest problem for the Patriots is the fact that they lack an all-star receiver. Smith Schuster is a good acquisition. But we would have liked to see him as the team’s second receiver and not the first. Let’s remember that during his best season in 2018, he collected 1426 yards. At that time, he was playing with Antonio Brown. When Antonio Brown left the Steelers, Smith Schuster never had such a strong season. Deandre Hopkins would have been an excellent candidate to fill this position. But unfortunately, he just signed a contract with the Tennessee Titans. Like many people, we are disappointed about this. Looking at the team’s receivers and tight ends, we don’t believe it’s enough to allow Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe to be well surrounded.
